This Saturday, A Youth-Led Forum For Mayoral Candidates Of San Bernardino

Less than a month before the June 7 primary election, several of the candidates competing for San Bernardino's highest office will attend a 10 a.m. mayoral discussion at Music Changing Lives' West 40th Street urban garden on Saturday, May 14.

Unlike prior candidate forums, this one is likely to be led by kids, artists, and local leaders, according to Josiah Bruny, the founder of Music Changing Lives, which has been around for over 25 years.

Candidates will be asked about their expertise in building public gardens and art programs, as well as how they plan to support such projects if elected.

"It's critical to teach artists and groups how to approach our local elected leaders," Bruny said this week.

"We've been trained to take what's given to us and not demand change from within our region." "We will no longer tolerate promises that have been breached. We want to hear what the candidates' plans are for our communities' present and future."

MAYORAL CANDIDATES

San Bernardino voters have seven mayoral candidates from which to choose:

  • Mayor John Valdivia

  • Gabriel Jaramillo

  • Mohammad Khan

  • Henry Nickel

  • Treasure Ortiz

  • Jim Penman

  • Helen Tran

At 7 p.m. this afternoon, these candidates will compete at the Feldhey library to see who is the most qualified to lead the great city of San Bernardino as mayor.

Both forums are accessible to the public and will be broadcast live on Channel 3 of the Inland Empire Media Group.

With 50 percent of the vote plus one vote, a contender wins the seat outright. Otherwise, in November, the top two vote-getters will face off.

The Urban Garden of Music Changing Lives is located at 261 W. 40th St. in San Bernardino.
